Art and the Written Word PDF Print E-mail

I have often thought of artists as the mirrors held up before the world. To some extent they are. They are the mirror on the wall you pass with haste and glance at, when you realize the booger hanging from your nose and bags under your eyes and coffee stain on your shirt from that morning. “What!?” you whisper to yourself as you disappear to the bathroom to clean up a bit, “Why didn’t anyone tell me about that?”

(Originally posted 03.04.2007)  As far as locations that generate WONDER, Antelope Canyon may well be at the top of my list for anywhere I've ever been. Over time, water has carved away at this sandstone to create what is arguably the world's most beautiful slot canyon. There are really two different canyons, a couple miles apart - Upper and Lower Antelope. The Lower was closed on my visit, so these shots are from the Upper, or as the Navajo call it: Tse' bighanilini (meaning "the place where water runs through rocks"). Entering the canyon is an undeniable spiritual experience. You go from a hot, sun-bleached, barren desert and duck into a quiet, cool, colorful sanctuary with flowing sandstone walls as high as 120 feet. The canyon itself is narrow, from about 20 feet wide to 4 feet near the end. Not for claustrophobics.

Song Detail

Song Title In the Sun
Artist Joseph Arthur

There are thousands of musicians in the world. There is an unfathomable amount of songs. These songs get categorized into "good" and "not-so-good" - depending on who you talk to. And "good" music will always be relative no matter how you slice it.

All of this said, ever so often a song (and Artist) comes along that captures the attention of a majority audience.

Joseph Arthur’s In the Sun has certainly emerged as one of these songs. Since Arthur began writing and performing in the mid-90s, he has managed to stay under the radar from any mainstream audience. However, his notoriety began to shift once featured on PBS's Austin City Limits late in 2005. (A show worthy of TiVo-ing by the way). The interesting thing is that Arthur was never on the show.

Short Film

Short Title This American Life: Kid Logic
Director Ira Glass

It should be no surprise that this kind of wisdom comes from a child.

With between 5 & 6 billion copies of the Bible floating around out there, it is hard to find anyone in America who hasn’t heard of Jesus. Even if you haven’t picked up one of those copies, you probably know how Jesus died (Mel Gibson did everything in his power to tell you.)

But do you know why people wanted to kill him?

In this brief clip from This American Life, taken from a show focused on kid logic, a four-year-old makes a connection that brings beautiful insight to this question. Only people who feel like they have something to lose stand opposed to the ideas of others.

People aren’t killed for starting country clubs; people are killed for starting revolutions.

What have you joined?

Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
