 welcome to the first addition of my blog on rednoW. no doubt you were all teaming with anticipation for this day to come. but, lucky for you, the wait is over. i am hoping to keep it regular – once a week – but if i miss a week don’t send out the search party…
i probably just got lazy or didn’t have anything to say. seeing as we are in the land of rednoW, i thought i would dedicate my first post to something that has me wondering: 1-18-08 yes, i admit, with my first blog post i am fueling the viral campaign for jj abrams' new movie due to hit theaters on….well, I’m not going to tell you, you’ll have to crack the code yourself. i refuse to join the ranks of crazed fans who are dedicating countless hours to studying the trailer for any signs of clues as to what this film will be about - but that doesn't mean i am not excited. i am willing to be used in this free marketing campaign that jj has stirred up with his ambiguity for one reason: i love him. okay, i have never met him and probably never will, so saying i love him is probably not true, but i do love his ideas. my wife and i were die hard ALIAS fans and have now scheduled our life around LOST. we have LOST watch parties every week and can’t wait for the new season to begin. so, if jj is making a movie…i am in. but let me state loud and clear that i have a hope for this movie. i hope that this movie is more than some creature tearing up new york city. i hope that jj is able to bring to this film what he has helped bring to LOST: engaging stories about people i find myself caring about. i know it is corny to say i care about fake people on tv, but the reality is that john, sawyer, kate, jack, hurley, sayid, sun…. they are not totally fake - they are real in the sense that i see pieces of myself in each of them. their stories overlap with mine in strange ways, and i like that - i might go so far as to say that i need that. i am moved by watching them move around the island. i won't soon forget the moment when john, in season 1, episode 19, pounded on the locked door of 'the hatch' in total despair and from deep below a light illuminated the sky. it took my breath away. there is a layer to this show that isn’t found in most tv writing, and it is this same layer that I hope to engage with in my comfy theater seat while eating every last kernel in a bucket of popcorn that is so big it could have a second life as a KFC Family Meal Deal container. if you can figure out when the film is coming out, maybe i will see you there. and if i do, i hope that jj serves us all up a huge helping of that Extra Layer that he is so good at tapping into.

... What is so interesting to me about the "extra layer" in LOST is that it isn't just a complication... In poetry people will talk about a poem that is a bit cryptic as being "complicated, but not complex." It seems most often when people attempt to add that "extra layer" to a tv show in the form of suspense or mystery or drama it feels "complicated," but not "complex." The best way I can describe that extra layer on LOST that Abrams adds to the story is that is makes this show complex, not just complicated. |
